In the Nigerian music industry, there are not so many producers – or even artists – that have the influence Don Jazzy has.
For almost two decades, the name Don Jazzy has been synonymous with top-notch music production, hit-making, and excellent artist scout.
His work with D’banj at Mo’hits, and what he did with Mavin Records after the split with the Mo’hit stars, is just iconic. And for that, he’s got every accolade he could possibly get, including being one of the richest musicians in the country, even though he’s never ever released a solo album.
Some say it’s his production that makes him legendary, but is that really what it is?
Don Jazzy, like many other producers during the era he came up, is known for owning a particular sound, such that he literally casts a big shadow over the work of any artist he works with.
He executive produced albums for D’banj and other artists on his roster. The most impressive of all is probably Mushin 2 Mohits, Wandecoal‘s classic debut.
Don Jazzy produced the album, and alongside Black Diamond created a new kind of sound that eventually developed into the contemporary afro-pop genre.
For this, Don Jazzy has been referred to as the greatest Nigerian music producer ever? But is that all there is?
Okay, while it’s no little feat to make a classic album, it’s also not a feat exclusive to Don Jazzy. ID Cabasa did it with 9ice‘s “Gongo Aso” in 2006, Pheelz with Olamide‘s BGEL in 2013. OJB Jezreel also did extensive work with 2face back in the day.
So, if that doesn’t make those other producers the greatest, why should that title be reserved for Don Jazzy? Or is it just because he has a lot of money and he has a big record label and others don’t?
Furthermore, Don Jazzy‘s recent works don’t exactly have anything special in them. They’re just what they are; beats. For instance, the beat he made for Rema‘s “Bounce” is something even Ozedikus could do. But everyone’s hyping it up because it’s good old Jazzy.
